What happens if conservative treatments fail to relieve the severe symptoms of a herniated disc?

What happens if conservative treatments fail to relieve the severe symptoms of a herniated disc?If conservative treatments like medications and physical therapy fail to provide relief after a few months, or if you develop progressive muscle weakness and loss of bowel or bladder control, surgical intervention becomes necessary. The most common procedure is a...

What specific physical movements should I avoid if I have a newly diagnosed herniated disc?

What specific physical movements should I avoid if I have a newly diagnosed herniated disc?If you have an active herniated disc, it is crucial to avoid movements that increase pressure on the front of the spinal column, as this can push more disc material out of the weakened outer layer. Bending forward at the...

Why does a herniated disc cause a loss of reflexes and changes in temperature sensitivity?

Why does a herniated disc cause a loss of reflexes and changes in temperature sensitivity? When the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes and presses against a spinal nerve root, it disrupts the normal transmission of electrical signals between the brain and the rest of the body. Because these spinal nerves contain both...

How do the symptoms of a cervical herniated disc differ from a lumbar one?

How do the symptoms of a cervical herniated disc differ from a lumbar one?The symptoms depend entirely on the specific location of the spinal nerve being compressed. A herniated disc in the cervical spine (neck) typically causes localized neck pain that radiates into the shoulders, arms, and hands. This is often accompanied by...

Can a herniated disc heal on its own without requiring medical procedures?

Can a herniated disc heal on its own without requiring medical procedures?Yes, many herniated discs can heal on their own through a natural physiological process called resorption. Over several weeks or months, the body’s immune system recognizes the protruding disc material as a foreign substance, gradually breaking it down and absorbing...

When does sciatic nerve compression become a medical emergency?

When does sciatic nerve compression become a medical emergency?Sciatica is a very common condition caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, typically resulting in pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back down the leg. In most cases, these symptoms are highly manageable...

What causes a vertebra to slip out of place (spondylolisthesis), and what activities should I avoid?

What causes a vertebra to slip out of place (spondylolisthesis), and what activities should I avoid?Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra displaces forward over the one below it. This can be caused by a congenital defect, degenerative arthritic changes in the facet joints, or repetitive physical stress that leads to a stress fracture (spondylolysis). As the...

What is Failed Back Surgery Syndrome, and what are the next steps if I still have pain?

What is Failed Back Surgery Syndrome, and what are the next steps if I still have pain?Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) refers to a condition where a patient continues to experience persistent pain or develops new neurological symptoms after undergoing one or more spine surgeries. This can occur due to incomplete nerve decompression, recurrent disc herniation,...

How do the symptoms of spinal stenosis differ from those of a herniated disc?

How do the symptoms of spinal stenosis differ from those of a herniated disc?Although both conditions can cause nerve compression and radiating pain, they often have different triggers. A herniated disc usually occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes, causing sudden and sharp pain that frequently worsens when sitting,...

Is Degenerative Disc Disease an actual disease, and can it be completely cured?

Is Degenerative Disc Disease an actual disease, and can it be completely cured?Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is not an actual disease, but rather a natural part of the aging process. Over time, the spinal discs lose hydration and flexibility, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and a decreased range of...

I went to Dr Garcia for severe back pain. Thanks to him my pain has drastically decreased and I can move without any problems. He was professional, thorough and spent a lot of time explaining my options. We discussed surgery and he felt that the problem could be remedied without it. I highly recommend Dr. Garcia and thank him for helping me!!!!!!
