Sciatica is a very common condition caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, typically resulting in pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back down the leg. In most cases, these symptoms are highly manageable and will gradually improve with conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and medication, over a few weeks or months.
However, sciatica can become a medical emergency if the nerve compression is severe enough to cause sudden, progressive leg weakness, or a complete loss of bowel and bladder control. This specific cluster of symptoms, known as Cauda Equina Syndrome, requires immediate medical evaluation and intervention to decompress the nerves and prevent permanent neurological damage.
