Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is not an actual disease, but rather a natural part of the aging process. Over time, the spinal discs lose hydration and flexibility, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and a decreased range of motion. While everyone experiences some level of disc wear and tear as they age, not everyone will experience chronic pain or neurological symptoms as a result.
While the anatomical changes cannot be completely reversed or “cured,” the symptoms can often be effectively managed. Treatments typically focus on physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles, anti-inflammatory medications, and targeted spinal injections to alleviate pain and improve the patient’s overall quality of life.
